Malta

Malta is this tiny island nation in the Mediterranean between Sicily and North Africa. It’s gorgeous, English is everywhere, and you can see the whole country in a few days. The history goes back thousands of years and the water is incredibly blue.

Valletta is the capital and it’s all honey-colored stone buildings. The whole city is a UNESCO site and you can walk it in an hour. St John’s Co-Cathedral is stunning inside. Upper Barrakka Gardens have great harbor views. The streets are steep and narrow. It’s small but packed with history and cafes.

The Three Cities across the harbor are quieter and more authentic. Vittoriosa, Senglea, Cospicua. Old fortifications, churches, waterfront walks. Way fewer tourists than Valletta. Take the ferry across from Valletta for great views.

Mdina is the old capital inland and it’s beautiful. Silent city they call it because no cars allowed. Walk the walls at sunset. Rabat next door has catacombs if you’re into that. The whole area feels medieval.

The beaches and swimming are the main draw. Golden Bay and Mellieha Bay have sand. Most beaches are rocky. Blue Lagoon on Comino island is touristy but the water is insane. St Peter’s Pool is a rock swimming spot that’s popular with locals. Gozo island is quieter with better diving.

Getting around means buses or rental car. Buses are cheap but slow and crowded. Rental car makes sense for a few days. The island is small so nothing is far. Ferries connect the islands.

Malta is tiny so a week is plenty. It’s more expensive than people expect. Food is good, mix of Italian and Middle Eastern influences. Cards work everywhere.

Best time is May to October for swimming. Winter is mild but some places close.
