Marrakech is the tourist hub with the crazy main square Jemaa el-Fnaa. Snake charmers, food stalls, chaos everywhere. The souks form massive labyrinths of shops. You’ll get lost and that’s fine. Majorelle Garden offers peace from the noise. Riads in the medina make beautiful places to stay. The city overwhelms you but in an exciting way. Fes has the better medina and feels more authentic. The tanneries smell terrible but look amazing. The old city is the world’s largest car-free urban area. Get a guide or you’ll wander lost for hours. The blue gate marks the main entrance. Fes feels more traditional and less touristy than Marrakech.
The Sahara desert stands out as a highlight. Merzouga is the starting point for camel treks and overnight camps in the dunes. Sunset and sunrise over the sand look incredible. The camps range from basic to luxury. Book through your accommodation. The drives to get there take forever but show you scenic routes. Chefchaouen is the blue city in the mountains. It’s small and chill after the chaos of Fes and Marrakech. Good for hiking and relaxing. The whole medina gets painted blue which looks striking. Tourists come here but you can manage the crowds.
The coast has Essaouira with beaches and wind. It’s laid back with fresh seafood. Casablanca is big and modern but honestly you can skip it unless you want to see the Hassan II Mosque. Food is tagines, couscous, pastilla, mint tea. Meals cost little and taste delicious. Street food fills the streets. The spices and flavors blow your mind. Trains connect major cities. CTM buses work for other routes. Rent a car for flexibility in mountains and desert but driving gets chaotic.
