Madeira

Madeira is a Portuguese island in the Atlantic off Morocco. It’s all about dramatic mountains, levada walks, and coastal cliffs. The weather is mild year-round so it’s popular with retirees and hikers. It’s greener and hillier than you expect. Not really a beach destination.

Funchal is the capital and where most people stay. The old town is nice with narrow streets and restaurants. The seafood market is worth seeing early morning. Cable car up to Monte has gardens and views. The toboggan ride down on wicker sleds is touristy but fun. The marina and waterfront are pleasant for walks.

Levada walks are the main hiking draw. Levadas are irrigation channels that run through mountains with paths alongside. The walks range from easy to challenging. Rabaçal has the most famous ones including the Twenty Five Fountains walk. Wear proper shoes because paths can be slippery and narrow.

The north coast is dramatic with cliffs and waves. Porto Moniz has natural swimming pools in volcanic rock. Gets busy but beautiful. São Vicente has caves. The east side around Santana has traditional thatched houses. The whole island is volcanic and mountainous. Roads are windy but scenic.

Pico do Arieiro and Pico Ruivo are the high peaks. The sunrise hike between them is stunning but tough. Book transport early because it’s popular. The views from the top are incredible on clear days. Weather changes fast in mountains.

Food is Portuguese with island twists. Espetada beef skewers, black scabbard fish, bolo do caco bread. Poncha is the local drink and it’s strong. Wine from Madeira is famous. The sweet fortified wine is an acquired taste.

Rent a car to explore properly. Buses exist but are limited. Roads are narrow and winding. Tunnels cut through mountains.
