Koh Kradan: A Unique Thai Island

Thousands of islands in southern Thailand draw tourists yearly. The region’s beauty explains this popularity. Visitors enjoy year-round sunshine, white beaches, and calm seas. Moreover, the delicious Thai food tempts taste buds.

However, some say these spots have lost their charm. They claim once-quiet beaches are now crowded and commercialized. Nevertheless, not all hope is lost. In fact, hidden gems still exist for those willing to explore. Koh Kradan stands out as one such unspoiled paradise.

A Secret Island Paradise

Yet, one stunning island in southern Thailand remains largely unknown. At first, I hesitated to share this hidden gem. Part of me wanted to keep this small paradise a secret, fearing it might change like other popular spots.

However, after showing photos to fellow travellers, their amazed reactions changed my mind. “I have to go there!” they exclaimed, eyes wide with wonder. As a result, I decided to reveal what I consider Thailand’s best-kept secret: Koh Kradan.

This untouched paradise deserves to be shared, albeit cautiously. By telling you about Koh Kradan, I hope to inspire responsible travel. In other words, let’s appreciate its beauty while preserving its unspoiled charm.

A picture speaks volumes. To truly showcase this island’s charm, just check out the photos of this place. These images tell Koh Kradan’s story better than words alone.

Prepare to be amazed by the stunning views. In fact, these snapshots might just convince you to pack your bags. After all, seeing is believing when it comes to this hidden paradise. If these pictures don’t inspire your wanderlust, few things will.

Unwind, Explore, and Indulge on Koh Kradan

Koh Kradan isn’t a party hotspot. You won’t find bustling bars here. Instead, restaurants at lodgings offer the only nightlife, with most guests retiring by 10 PM. However, this tranquillity is the island’s true charm.

With views this breathtaking, what more could you need? The crystal-clear sea reveals tropical fish just steps from the shore. No snorkel required! Furthermore, this small island boasts two distinct sides to explore.

This simplicity allows you to truly relax. Additionally, you can enjoy snorkelling or treat yourself to a massage. In essence, Koh Kradan offers a perfect escape from the hectic world.

Koh Kradan has two distinct sides. The front welcomes boats and offers stunning views. Meanwhile, the back hosts Sunset Beach, a small cove with an aptly-named view.

Here, I experienced the best Thai massage of my life. Picture getting pampered with an incredible ocean backdrop. Moreover, this island caters to adventurous backpackers rather than luxury seekers. As a result, prices for food and massages remain reasonable.

The island’s simplicity adds to its charm. In fact, its lesser-known status keeps it authentic and affordable. You’ll find high-quality experiences without breaking the bank. Koh Kradan truly offers a unique blend of beauty and value.

Embrace Nature on Koh Kradan

Koh Kradan’s closeness to nature can be challenging, especially for city dwellers. While this rawness adds to its beauty, it might feel a bit too basic for some. However, we felt safe throughout our stay, despite the island’s wildness.

Be prepared to encounter wildlife, possibly even in your room. Additionally, mosquitoes are plentiful here. Bring repellent and use the provided mosquito nets. Even so, you may still get a few bites. Nevertheless, these minor inconveniences didn’t diminish Koh Kradan’s paradise-like charm for me.

In essence, this island offers a true back-to-nature experience. While it may push you out of your comfort zone, the rewards are well worth it.

Reaching Koh Kradan:

How to visit this secret island:

Koh Kradan sits in the Andaman Sea, near Koh Mok. It’s close to popular spots like Koh Phi Phi and Koh Lipe. Surprisingly, it remains off most travellers’ radar.

Getting there is simple. From Trang, take a one-hour Tigerline ferry trip. Book online. From Phuket, it’s a 3.5-hour ferry ride. Fly to Trang or Phuket from Bangkok or other Thai cities.

The journey requires planning but preserves the island’s pristine nature. Pack your bags for this untouched paradise!

Koh Kradan, fishing boat

Due to its small size and to protect coral, ferries can’t dock directly at Koh Kradan. Instead, a fishing boat will transport you from the ferry to the beach. This extra ride costs about 200 baht (£4), not included in your ferry ticket.

Remember, there’s no other way to reach the shore unless you fancy swimming with your luggage! Therefore, bring enough cash for this boat ride both ways. Additionally, pack extra money for your stay. The island has no ATMs, and all payments are in cash.

In essence, proper planning ensures a smooth arrival. By preparing for these final steps, you’ll start your Koh Kradan adventure stress-free. So gather your cash, and get ready for a unique island experience!

Consider a Day Trip to Koh Kradan

Not ready for an overnight stay? No problem. You can visit Koh Kradan on a day trip. Stay on a nearby island with better amenities, such as Koh Lanta and hop over for the day.

Around lunchtime, the main beach gets busy with day-trippers. Boats from neighbouring islands stop here as part of island-hopping tours. However, this buzz is short-lived. After a couple of hours, these visitors move on, leaving the beach peaceful once again.

This approach offers flexibility. You’ll experience Koh Kradan’s beauty without committing to its basic facilities. Moreover, you’ll witness the island’s transformation from lively to serene in just one day. It’s a perfect taste of this hidden paradise.

Choose Your Koh Kradan Hideaway

Koh Kradan offers limited lodging options due to its low profile. When I visited, only five small-scale accommodations existed. Most were basic, though I’ve heard a few upscale choices have appeared recently.

We picked Paradise Lost, a cluster of wooden huts in a jungle clearing. It’s the only inland option, as others sit beach front. Interestingly, Paradise Lost was the island’s first accommodation and remains popular.

An American sailor named Wally discovered Koh Kradan years ago and built these huts. Though elderly now, he still lives there while his Thai wife manages the place.

This unique setup adds charm to your stay. Moreover, it offers a true Robinson Crusoe experience. Whether you choose a beach hut or jungle hideaway, you’ll find authenticity here.

Koh Kradan’s Rustic Accommodations

Paradise Lost offers huts with private or shared bathrooms. While clean, shared facilities can be inconvenient for nighttime needs. All huts have fans, but no AC. Additionally, a noisy generator provides electricity, reminding you of the island’s basic setup.

The huts are simple inside and they’re clean but don’t fully keep wildlife out. For about 700 baht nightly, a private bathroom hut is a good deal. However, next time I’ll check out higher-end options.

Paradise lost site

One standout feature is the food. Guests from other accommodations flock here for dinner. Paradise Lost serves the best Thai and Western dishes on the island. Moreover, it’s affordable. In essence, while basic, this place offers unique charm and excellent dining.
