Mendocino is north of San Francisco, a 3-hour drive away. From Sonoma, it’s a 2.5-hour drive northwest. Renting a car is the best way to reach Mendocino.
If you’re coming from Southern California, you might want to start your journey with a Los Angeles 4 day itinerary before heading north to Mendocino.
In fact, this area is “off-the-grid” for California. There are no long-distance trains. Only a few short tourist trains run here.
Also, Mendocino is far from local airports. As a result, it’s hard to find taxis or Ubers that will go there. Therefore, having your own car is important.
Driving gives you freedom to explore. You can stop at interesting places along the way. Additionally, you’ll need a car to see different parts of Mendocino County once you arrive.
Getting Around Mendocino
Mendocino town is very small. Once you’re there, you can walk or rent a bike easily. If you have trouble moving, use a car. The town has lots of street parking, but it gets full in summer.
If you want to see Fort Bragg or Anderson Valley too, drive your own car. Don’t use Uber or taxis. These are hard to find in this remote area. Also, cell phones might not work well in some places.
