Without a doubt, experiences in Atlantic Canada will amaze you. To illustrate, I’ll list some of our favourite activities. These picks show why this region deserves more notice when considering things to do in Atlantic Canada.

Things to do in Atlantic Canada, Halifax

1. Vibrant Halifax

Halifax, Nova Scotia’s capital, is likely your international entry point when planning a trip to Atlantic Canada.

Once here, explore the boardwalk area for some Poutine. Also, visit Halifax Citadel and the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia.

Afterwards, dine at Five Fishermen. In fact, they serve some of the city’s best food, especially their delicious lobster.

2. Fundy Kayaking

Near Hopewell Rocks, you can kayak in the Bay of Fundy. The bay’s strong tides create a unique paddling experience. In fact, this offers a unique view of the coastline. We spent hours doing this and loved it, though our arms felt like jelly afterwards!

To clarify, you need strength to navigate the currents. For safety, only go out with trained professionals and local experts when experiencing things to do in Atlantic Canada.

3. Charming Charlottetown

Charlottetown, the capital of Prince Edward Island, is a key east-coast-city to see. When you get there, visit St. Dunstan’s Basilica. This church stands out with its eye-catching design. Also, visit Beaconsfield Historic House and stroll down Victoria Row.

If hunger strikes, try Claddagh Oyster House. In particular, they serve some of the tastiest local seafood in the area.

4. Atlantic Whale Watching

Gatherall’s Puffin & Whale Watch offers amazing wildlife experiences in Atlantic Canada. They’re based in Bay Bulls, about an hour from St. John’s.

In this area, you might see puffins and humpback whales. Many call it one of North America’s best places to watch whales. On your boat trip, stay alert and keep your camera handy. With luck, you could spot some of the 500,000 puffins or many whales that live here. Additionally, try getting ‘screeched’ – it’s a fun Newfoundlander tradition!

5. Moncton’s Hidden Charms

Moncton sits in south-east New Brunswick. It’s less famous than Peggy’s Cove. Still, it’s worth a visit if you’re nearby. While there, spot city artwork, visit Magnetic Hill, and enjoy seafood at catch-22. In essence, it’s perfect for a half-day stop while travelling through New Brunswick during your trip to Atlantic Canada.

6. Picturesque Peggy’s Cove

Peggy’s Cove is famous on Canada’s east coast. Located south of Halifax, it’s worth visiting. This stunning area offers much to explore. First, see the iconic Peggy’s Point Lighthouse. Then, browse The Buoy Shop for gifts. Finally, enjoy Dee Dee’s Ice Cream. Overall, it’s a top experience in Atlantic Canada.

7. St John’s Colourful Charms

St. John’s, in Newfoundland and Labrador, is a top place to visit in Atlantic Canada. The city offers a mix of history and coastal charm. Specifically, it offers a slower pace than big cities like Toronto.

During your visit, check out Signal Hill and Cape Spear. Also, don’t miss the Jellybean Row Houses, colourful homes that line the streets.

After that, head to Quidi Vidi. At least try lunch at Mallard Cottage. Book early, as it fills up fast.

To work off your meal, try the East Coast Trail. In particular, the Witless Bay area offers stunning views.

8. Hopewell Rocks Wonders

Hopewell Rocks sits on New Brunswick’s coast near Lower Cape. Exploring this site is a special experience in Atlantic Canada. The rocks offer a rare view of the Bay of Fundy’s powerful tides. Without a doubt, it’s a must-see attraction when considering things to do in Atlantic Canada.

You see, the Bay of Fundy’s tides shape these rocks. As a result, they form dramatic coastal formations that are impressive to witness.

At low tide, you can walk on the beach itself. In fact, the whole east coast boasts stunning shorelines, with Hopewell Rocks standing out as an iconic landmark.

9. Bouctouche Beauty

Just up the coast from Moncton lies La Dune de Bouctouche, a stunning beach area. These dunes stretch about 12km, among the largest on Canada’s east coast. Additionally, the entire Bay of Bouctouche area is beautiful. On sunny days, it’s especially appealing for visitors exploring things to do in Atlantic Canada.

10. Grand Pré Heritage Trail

On Nova Scotia’s Bay of Fundy coast, a UNESCO World Heritage Site waits for you. It’s a good stop on your way to Halls Harbour. This site holds important natural or cultural value.

You see, Grand Pré, founded in the 17th century by French colonists, later became crucial for Acadian resettlement. In fact, it played an integral role in their history.

Nowadays, it’s a must-visit historic site on Canada’s east coast. After exploring, head to Halls Harbour Lobster Pound for a feast. Without doubt, you’ll leave with a full belly and rich cultural insights when visiting Atlantic Canada.

11. Charming Lunenburg Exploration

Discovering Lunenburg was a highlight of experiences in Atlantic Canada, and not just for its food scene!

You see, this picturesque town looks like a 1950s postcard. Colourful, historic houses line the streets, creating a unique atmosphere.

While there, stop for lunch at The Fish Shack. Afterwards, wander the little streets filled with independent shops and cafes. We both fell in love with this charming town when exploring things to do in Atlantic Canada!
