Greece offers countless captivating destinations. While its iconic islands attract many visitors, the mainland also boasts remarkable spots. However, you can’t see everything in one trip. Therefore, I’ll share some best places to visit in Greece.
These range from tiny islands to historic fishing villages. You’ll discover a mix of popular and lesser-known places. Many tourists focus solely on Greece’s stunning islands.
Undeniably, these are breathtaking and among the country’s highlights. Nevertheless, Greece has much more to offer beyond its islands.
These Are My Absolute Favourites!
1. Meteora
Meteora is a special place in Greece. It’s unlike any other spot.
The huge monastery sits high up in the Pindus Mountains. It’s hundreds of meters above the ground.
For over a millennium, religious settlers have used these spots. Subsequently, monastery construction began during the 15th-century Ottoman Empire expansion. Consequently, monks sought refuge in these remote locations to escape persecution.
Initially, access required climbing tied-together ladders or being hauled up in a large net.
Fortunately, today’s visitors can use carved stone steps and a bridge connecting to a nearby plateau.
At its peak, Meteora boasted 20 monasteries. However, only six remain – five for men and one for women. Undoubtedly, Great Meteora, the largest, is a must-see. To visit, either fly into Ioannina National Airport (120km away) or take a direct train from Athens to Kalambaka.
2. Kefalonia
Remember when I mentioned stunning Greek islands? Well, Kefalonia certainly fits that description. Furthermore, it boasts two natural wonders you shouldn’t miss.
Drogarati Cave and Melissani Lake are great spots to see in Greece. They’re special places for visitors who want something different.
These sites are near each other, so you can see both in one day.
Interestingly, the lake got its name after excavations in 1951 and 1962. These digs uncovered Minoan illustrations of the god Pan and the nymph Melissanthi, indicating centuries of use.
The lake’s formation resulted from a massive underground cavern collapse. Consequently, a large circular opening to the surface emerged, creating the spectacle we enjoy today.
After exploring these wonders, relax at Petani Beach. Additionally, you can spot Mount Ainos and wander the shores of Fteri Beach. Undeniably, these locations offer stunning views and are among the best places in Greece to visit.
3. Delphi
Delphi Delphi sits high on Mount Parnassus. It’s one of the best places in Greece to visit for those interested in Greek history. Long ago, Greeks thought Delphi was the centre of the world. They came here to worship.
When you visit, check out the Temple of Apollo. The Oracle lived here. Also, see the Athena Treasury and old stadium. These sites show Greece’s past.
Delphi is special. It’s easy to get to as well. You can drive there from Athens in roughly 2.5 hours. This makes it great for a day trip.
4. Argolis
Argolis, a historic region in northeastern Peloponnese, offers captivating sights. While there, visit Mycenae near Mykines.
Approx 4,000 yrs ago, Mycenae was considered an important Greek city. Today, explore its ruins and discover its rich history.
During your visit, see the Lion Gate. Additionally, check out the Tomb of Aegisthus outside the ancient city walls. Furthermore, don’t miss the Treasury of Atreus. Undoubtedly, Argolis is ideal for ancient history enthusiasts.
Finally, consider pairing your Argolis trip with a visit to the theatre of Epidavros. This combination provides a comprehensive look at Greece’s past.
5. Crete
Crete offers diverse experiences, making it one of the best places in Greece to visit. This island blends urban exploration with island adventures, suiting various interests.
In north Crete, near Heraklion, you can see old Knossos ruins. This city is very old. It goes back to 7000 BC. It’s one of the oldest places where people lived in Europe.
After Knossos, visit Spinalonga Island. Then, swim at Seitan Limania Beach. Finally, enjoy local cuisine at a cafe in Chania’s Venetian Harbour.

10. Rhodes

Andros, part of the Greek Cyclades, remains less famous than Santorini or Mykonos. Nevertheless, it offers an authentic Greek experience worth exploring.

Later, wander through Andros Town’s narrow streets and alleys. Here, you’ll find excellent Greek coffee spots. Moreover, restaurants like Endochora serve delicious seafood.

16. Zakynthos
Zakynthos is a popular Greek island, and for very good reason, it’s stunning.
While there’s loads to do on Zakynthos, visiting Navagio Beach is a must. It offers incredible views and vistas.
Remember, you can only access the beach by sea due to dangerous surrounding cliffs.
Always exercise caution at the top and avoid risky photo opportunities. Book a boat trip through your hotel for an easy visit. Try to arrive early as it gets crowded later in the day.
After Navagio, take a boat tour to Keri Caves. Then, visit Agios Dionisios Church. Finally, enjoy dinner at Greek Traditional Cafe Ouzeri, known for its excellent moussaka.
17. Athens
Athens, the famous ancient Greek capital, now bustles with modern life. Yet, it still boasts numerous ancient sites worth exploring.
When you get there, go to the National Archaeological Museum. You’ll see the Antikythera Mechanism. It’s a very old calculator from 2,000 years ago. This bronze instrument is truly remarkable.
Next, set off to the iconic Acropolis and Parthenon. These structures symbolize Greece’s rich history.
If time allows, explore the Plaka neighbourhood. Here, you’ll find charming tavernas and coffee shops. Additionally, visit the Anafiotika area, which resembles a Greek island.
Don’t miss the Temple of Olympian Zeus. Likewise, see the 2,000-year-old Odeon of Herodes Atticus.

18. Penteli
Penteli, a small town near Athens, is easily accessible – just 8-10km from the city centre.
One of Penteli’s main attractions is the beautiful Monastery and Rododafni Castle. The castle, built for the Duchess of Plaisance, took over 100 years to complete.
Interestingly, ancient Athens and the Acropolis were built using Penteli marble, quarried from nearby hills. While quarrying is no longer advisable, you can still explore the area’s trails.
For the adventurous, Davelis Cave in the mountain offers an intriguing destination.
