Attractions in Cairo Egypt: What to See and Do
Attractions in Cairo Egypt captivate visitors with their remarkable blend of ancient mysteries and vibrant contemporary culture. I’ve wandered these
Egypt has ancient pyramids, temples along the Nile, and Red Sea beaches. It’s one of those bucket list destinations everyone wants to see. The history is incredible but the tourist hassle is real. Cairo is chaotic and the touts are aggressive. A week covers the main sites. Two weeks adds the beach or more temple time. It’s affordable once you’re there.
Cairo is massive and overwhelming with traffic and noise everywhere. The Egyptian Museum has King Tut’s gold mask and mummies. It’s crowded and hot inside with minimal AC. The Pyramids of Giza sit right at the edge of the city now. The Great Pyramid is huge and the photos don’t capture the scale. The Sphinx is smaller than you expect. Vendors and camel guys hassle you constantly for money. Go early morning or late afternoon. The sound and light show at night is cheesy. Islamic Cairo has mosques and the Khan el-Khalili bazaar with narrow alleys full of shops.
Luxor is the temple city on the Nile with ancient sites everywhere. The Valley of the Kings has pharaoh tombs cut into rock. King Tut’s tomb is small and plain compared to others. Karnak Temple is massive with columns and hieroglyphics. Hatshepsut’s temple sits against cliffs and looks dramatic. Nile cruises go between Luxor and Aswan stopping at temples. Abu Simbel near Sudan has giant Ramses statues carved from the cliff. The temples were moved when they built the dam. Aswan is more relaxed than Cairo with Nubian culture.
Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh on the Red Sea have resort hotels and diving. The coral reefs are beautiful with colorful fish everywhere. The diving is world class and cheap. The resorts feel separate from real Egypt. Dahab is the backpacker dive town with a more relaxed vibe. Mount Sinai in Sinai Peninsula is where Moses got the Ten Commandments. You hike up at night to see sunrise. St Catherine’s Monastery sits at the base.
Food is koshari rice lentils and pasta, falafel, shawarma, ful medames beans, fresh bread.
