Attractions in Cairo Egypt: What to See and Do
Attractions in Cairo Egypt captivate visitors with their remarkable blend of ancient mysteries and vibrant contemporary culture. I’ve wandered these
Cairo is chaos and history mixed together. Twenty million people, traffic that never stops, pollution, and the Pyramids right there on the edge of the city. It’s overwhelming and fascinating. The ancient sites are incredible but the city itself takes getting used to. Three or four days is enough.
The Pyramids of Giza are the main reason you come. They’re exactly as impressive as you imagine. Go early morning before heat and crowds. The Sphinx is smaller than expected. You can go inside the pyramids but it’s tight and hot. Camel rides are everywhere but haggle hard. The site gets packed with tours by midday.
The Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square has Tutankhamun’s treasures and mummies. It’s old and crowded but the collection is incredible. The new Grand Egyptian Museum near the pyramids is supposed to open soon with better displays. Islamic Cairo has mosques and the Khan el-Khalili bazaar. The bazaar is touristy but atmospheric at night.
The Nile runs through the city. Felucca boat rides at sunset are nice for escaping the chaos. The Coptic area has old churches. Saqqara and Memphis pyramids south of the city see fewer tourists. The step pyramid at Saqqara is older than Giza. Traffic is insane. Crossing streets is terrifying. Horns blare constantly. The pollution is heavy. Scams and hassle from touts are constant at tourist sites. It’s exhausting but that’s Cairo. Stay firm and walk away from aggressive sellers.
Food is koshari rice and lentils, falafel, shawarma, kofta. Street food is cheap and good. Tap water is not safe so stick to bottled. The food is flavorful but not fancy. Tea and shisha cafes are everywhere.
Getting around means Uber or taxis. Metro works but gets packed. Everything takes longer than expected because of traffic. Most people hire drivers for pyramid trips.
Cairo is cheap. Hotels, food, entry fees are all affordable. Tipping is expected everywhere.
