South Africa sits at the continent’s southern tip with mountains, beaches, safaris, and complicated history. It’s the most developed African country with good infrastructure. Cape Town and Johannesburg anchor each end. The wealth gap is huge and visible everywhere. Two weeks covers the highlights but you could spend months. Crime exists so stay aware but don’t let fear stop you from going.

South Africa Cape Town and Garden Route

Cape Town sits below Table Mountain with the ocean on three sides. The mountain dominates everything with cable cars going up for views. The Waterfront has shops and restaurants but feels touristy. Camps Bay beach has white sand and mountain backdrop. Boulders Beach near Simon’s Town has penguin colonies walking around. Robben Island where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned needs advance booking. The Winelands east of the city have Stellenbosch and Franschhoek with tastings at beautiful estates. The Garden Route stretches east along the coast with beaches and forests. Knysna has a lagoon and oysters. Plettenberg Bay has great beaches. The drive shows stunning coastal scenery.

South Africa Kruger Park and Safaris

Kruger National Park in the northeast is one of Africa’s best safari parks. The Big Five all live here with lions, elephants, leopards, rhinos, and buffalo. You can self-drive or book guided tours. The park is massive so spend several days exploring different sections. Private reserves bordering Kruger cost more but offer luxury lodges and walking safaris. Sabi Sands sees lots of leopards. The drives happen at dawn and dusk when animals are active. Seeing wildlife in their natural habitat never gets old. Addo Elephant Park near Port Elizabeth focuses on elephants if you skip Kruger.

South Africa Johannesburg and Durban

Johannesburg is the biggest city with wealth and poverty side by side. Soweto township tours show the history of apartheid and Nelson Mandela’s house. The Apartheid Museum tells the country’s difficult story honestly. Maboneng is the artsy neighborhood with galleries and cafes. The city has a rough reputation but interesting culture. Durban on the east coast has warm Indian Ocean water and big Indian population. The beaches stretch for miles with a boardwalk. Bunny chows are hollowed bread filled with curry. The Golden Mile beachfront gets busy with locals on weekends.
