Zanzibar

Zanzibar is an island off Tanzania with white sand beaches, turquoise water, and Swahili culture. It’s the perfect beach escape after safari dust covers you. Stone Town has history and markets while the beaches have resorts and diving. A week lets you see both sides of the island. The vibe stays relaxed and the seafood tastes incredible fresh from the ocean.

Zanzibar Stone Town and History

Stone Town is the old capital with narrow alleys and carved wooden doors on every building. The architecture mixes Arab, Persian, Indian, and European influences from centuries of trade. Get lost in the maze of streets and you’ll find hidden courtyards. The old slave market stands as a sobering reminder of the island’s dark history. House of Wonders museum shows island history with exhibits on sultans and traders. Forodhani Gardens food market opens at night with vendors grilling fresh seafood and making Zanzibar pizza. The sunset waterfront draws locals and tourists together. Markets sell spices, fabrics, and souvenirs through winding lanes.

Zanzibar Beaches and Water Activities

The beaches spread along the east coast with different vibes. Nungwi in the north has the best swimming with no tide issues leaving you stranded. It’s developed with hotels and restaurants lining the sand. Paje on the east has kite surfing and a backpacker vibe with hostels. Kendwa next to Nungwi has sunset views because it faces west. The southeast beaches like Michamvi stay quieter with fewer people. All have white sand and clear turquoise water. Diving and snorkeling work excellently here. Mnemba Atoll has the best marine life with colorful fish and coral. Dolphins swim off Kizimkazi but the tours can push the animals too hard. Most hotels arrange water activities easily. The water stays warm year round.

Zanzibar Spice Tours and Getting Around

Spice tours from Stone Town visit farms growing cloves, vanilla, cinnamon in the interior. You taste everything fresh and learn the island history of spice trade. It fills a few interesting hours. Jozani Forest has red colobus monkeys jumping through trees. Prison Island has giant tortoises walking around slowly. Both make easy half day trips from Stone Town. Food is Swahili with coconut, spices, seafood mixed together. Octopus curry, grilled fish, biryani, urojo soup taste amazing. The food in Stone Town beats beach resort restaurants. Getting around means dala dala minibuses which cost little and pack people tight. Taxis work for longer trips between areas. Stone Town to beaches takes an hour driving.
