Malaysia doesn’t get enough love and I don’t understand why. It’s got beaches, jungle, cities, food that’ll ruin you for other places. And it’s way easier to travel than most of Southeast Asia. English works almost everywhere and the infrastructure actually functions.
Kuala Lumpur is worth two or three days. The Petronas Towers are cool at night and the street food in Jalan Alor is amazing. But the real star is Penang up north. George Town has the best food scene in the country. Char kway teow, laksa, nasi kandar. I gained five pounds in a week and regret nothing.
The islands are where you go to decompress. Perhentian Islands have clear water and cheap bungalows right on the beach. Langkawi is more developed if you want actual resorts and duty-free booze. Tioman is the middle ground. All three have great diving and snorkeling without the crowds you get in Thailand.
Malaysian Borneo is a different trip entirely. Kinabalu National Park if you want to climb Southeast Asia’s highest peak. The Kinabatangan River for orangutans and proboscis monkeys. Mulu Caves are massive and kind of mind-blowing. Budget more time and money for Borneo because flights from the mainland add up.
Getting around the peninsula is easy. Buses are cheap and comfortable. Trains run between major cities but they’re slow. Flights make sense for longer distances and they cost less than you’d think. Grab works everywhere for city transport.
Money is simple. Ringgit goes far and cards work in most places. Still carry cash for hawker stalls and small shops. Food is so cheap you’ll eat like royalty on a backpacker budget.
Best time is March to October for the west coast and islands. East coast gets hammered by monsoons November to February.
