Maldives

The Maldives is stupid beautiful and yes it’s expensive but hear me out. You don’t have to drop ten grand on an overwater villa to make it work. Local islands opened up a few years back and changed everything for normal people with normal budgets.

Here’s the deal. The country is twelve hundred islands grouped into atolls. Resort islands are one-resort-per-island situations where you’re trapped paying resort prices for everything. Local islands have guesthouses, local restaurants, and actual towns. You can swim in the same water for a tenth of the price.

Maafushi is the most developed local island and honestly it’s great for first-timers. Thirty minutes by speedboat from the airport. Tons of guesthouses, dive shops, and restaurants. Bikini beaches are separate from local beaches because it’s a Muslim country so just respect that. The diving and snorkeling are incredible. Manta rays, whale sharks, sea turtles everywhere.

Getting around means speedboats or seaplanes. Speedboats are cheaper but take longer. Seaplanes are amazing if you’re going to a resort or far-flung atoll. Public ferries exist but they’re slow and don’t run daily. Most guesthouses arrange transfers so just book that ahead.

Money stuff gets tricky. Resorts take cards but local islands are more cash-heavy. US dollars work everywhere. ATMs exist on bigger local islands but don’t count on them. The exchange rate is fixed so no haggling needed.

Weather matters more here than most places. November to April is dry season with calm seas and perfect visibility for diving. May to October brings rain and rougher water. Some guesthouses close during low season.

Food on local islands is cheap. Fresh fish, curries, and roshi bread. Alcohol is banned on local islands but resorts have it.
