Taiwan is one of those places that surprises everyone who goes. It’s got mountains, beaches, cities, and the best night markets in Asia. Plus it’s way easier to travel than most of the region. English signs everywhere and people actually help when you’re lost.
Taipei is the main hub and it’s awesome. Night markets are the highlight, especially Shilin and Raohe. Stinky tofu, bubble tea, fried chicken, soup dumplings. You could eat for a week and never hit the same stall twice. Taipei 101 used to be the tallest building in the world and the view is still worth it. Beitou has hot springs if you need to chill out.
The east coast is where things get wild. Taroko Gorge has marble cliffs and hiking trails that’ll blow your mind. Hualien is the base town and it’s got a great night market. The train ride along the coast from Taipei to Taitung is one of the best in Asia. Sit on the right side going south.
Tainan down south is the oldest city and the food capital. It’s way more laid back than Taipei. Every local will tell you their city has the best food in Taiwan and honestly they might be right. Danzai noodles, coffin bread, milkfish everything.
Getting around is easy. High-speed rail connects the west coast in a few hours. Local trains are cheap and go everywhere. Buses fill in the gaps. Rent a scooter if you’re comfortable but traffic in cities is intense. The metro in Taipei works great.
Money is simple. 7-Eleven ATMs take foreign cards and there’s one on every corner. Cash is still king at night markets and small shops. Cards work fine in bigger places.
Best time to visit is October to April. Summer is hot and typhoon season.
