Caribbean

The Caribbean spreads across dozens of islands with white sand beaches, turquoise water, and different cultures on each one. Some islands feel British, others Dutch, French, or Spanish. Each has its own vibe from party central to sleepy fishing villages. Two weeks lets you hit two or three islands by ferry or short flights. Hurricane season runs June to November so winter is peak time. It’s expensive on most islands.

Caribbean Eastern Islands and Lesser Antilles

The eastern Caribbean has smaller islands strung down from Puerto Rico. The British Virgin Islands have sailing culture with yacht charters between islands. Tortola and Virgin Gorda have beaches tucked in rocky coves. The Baths on Virgin Gorda has giant granite boulders creating pools and caves. St. Lucia has the dramatic Pitons rising from the sea with rainforest covering volcanic peaks. The island mixes French and British influences. Martinique and Guadeloupe are actually France with euros and French language. The beaches rival anywhere and the food is Creole French. Dominica between them focuses on nature with hiking, waterfalls, and diving rather than beaches. Barbados on the eastern edge has British cricket culture and rum distilleries. The east coast has Atlantic waves while the west stays calm.

Caribbean ABC Islands and Southern Caribbean

Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao sit off Venezuela with Dutch influence and desert landscapes. Aruba has constant wind keeping it cool with resort beaches on the west coast. The island is flat and dry unlike volcanic Caribbean islands. Bonaire draws divers with shore diving right from beaches and pristine reefs. Curacao has Willemstad capital with colorful Dutch buildings and floating bridge. The islands stay outside the hurricane belt. Trinidad and Tobago at the south end have Carnival culture and diverse population. Trinidad feels more South American with Indian and African influences. Tobago has quieter beaches and rainforest. Grenada north of there grows spices with nutmeg everywhere and beautiful bays.

Caribbean Western Islands and Greater Antilles

Jamaica has reggae culture, jerk chicken, and dramatic mountains dropping to beaches. Negril has seven mile beach and cliff jumping at Rick’s Cafe. The north coast around Montego Bay and Ocho Rios draws cruise ships. The Bahamas north of Cuba has hundreds of islands with the Exumas showing off swimming pigs and incredible water colors. Nassau gets overrun with cruise passengers. The Dominican Republic shares Hispaniola with Haiti and has all-inclusive resorts on Punta Cana beaches. Puerto Rico is US territory with San Juan’s colonial old town and El Yunque rainforest. Cuba has vintage cars, salsa music, and colonial architecture though tourism is complicated.

Food changes by island with jerk chicken, conch fritters, roti, fresh fish, rum everywhere, tropical fruit.
