Honduras

Honduras sits in Central America with Caribbean islands, Mayan ruins, and mountains but fewer tourists than neighbors. The Bay Islands draw divers while the mainland stays less visited. It’s cheaper than Costa Rica and more authentic. The country has rough reputation in places but tourist areas stay relatively safe. One week works for islands or two weeks adds mainland sites. The diving is world class and incredibly affordable.

Honduras Bay Islands and Diving

Roatan is the biggest Bay Island with developed beaches and dive shops everywhere. West Bay Beach has white sand and clear turquoise water with the reef close to shore. West End village is the backpacker hub with cheap hostels and dive centers. The barrier reef runs along the islands as the second largest in the world. Diving costs less here than almost anywhere with certification courses under three hundred dollars. The underwater sites show healthy coral, sea turtles, and nurse sharks. Utila island is smaller and grungier with even cheaper diving. The town looks rough around the edges with wooden buildings on stilts. Whale sharks pass through from February to April bringing divers hoping to swim with them. The vibe is young backpackers getting dive certified then partying at beach bars. Utila has minimal actual beach but the diving matters more.

Honduras Copan Ruins and Western Highlands

Copan near the Guatemala border has impressive Mayan ruins with the best stone carvings in the Maya world. The hieroglyphic stairway has the longest known Mayan text carved into steps. Detailed stelae show rulers in elaborate costumes. The site is smaller than Tikal but the artistry stands out. Copan Ruinas town nearby has cobblestone streets and decent restaurants. Macaw Mountain bird park rescues parrots and macaws flying around open enclosures. The western highlands around here have coffee farms and cooler mountain air. Santa Rosa de Copan produces cigars you can watch being hand rolled.

Honduras Caribbean Coast and Capital

La Ceiba on the north coast serves as the jumping point for ferries to the Bay Islands. Pico Bonito National Park inland has rainforest trails and Cangrejal River for white water rafting. The area gets rain and stays green year round. Tela west along the coast has beaches and Garifuna villages with Afro-Caribbean culture. The locals speak Garifuna language and cook cassava bread. Tegucigalpa is the mountain capital but most tourists skip it completely. San Pedro Sula is the business city with worse reputation for crime. The mainland needs more caution than the islands about where you go.

Food is baleadas flour tortillas with beans and cheese, seafood on islands, tajadas fried plantain chips, horchata rice drink, cheap beer.
