Linz Austria Tourist Attractions & Things to Do in Linz
So here’s the thing about Linz that most people don’t know. Most travelers skip it for Vienna or Salzburg, but
Linz sits on the Danube River in northern Austria as the third biggest city mixing industrial history with modern art and technology. It’s less touristy than Vienna or Salzburg which keeps it authentic and cheaper. The city was European Capital of Culture in 2009 and invested heavily in museums and public spaces. The old town stays compact along the river with a modern feel compared to other Austrian cities. Two days covers the main sights and the relaxed atmosphere. Hitler grew up here which the city acknowledges honestly without hiding the dark history.
Hauptplatz is one of the largest medieval squares in Europe stretching long and wide surrounded by pastel buildings and cafes. Trinity Column rises in the center made of marble. The square hosts Christmas markets and summer festivals. Old Cathedral has baroque interior but nothing too special. New Cathedral is actually newer and bigger with the second tallest spire in Austria. Ars Electronica Center is the futuristic looking museum on the north bank of the Danube focused on technology, media art, and future innovations. The exhibitions change and get interactive with robotics and virtual reality. It’s more interesting than it sounds. Lentos Art Museum sits right on the river in a glass box that lights up at night with colorful LEDs. The collection focuses on modern and contemporary Austrian art.
Pöstlingberg hill rises on the edge of town with a cute tram climbing up to the pilgrimage church and views over the Danube and city. The Grottenbahn cave railway runs through fairytale scenes inside the hill popular with kids. The river promenade along the Danube has bike paths, parks, and spots for swimming in summer. Locals hang out on the banks when weather is good. The steel industry still operates making Linz feel less precious than other Austrian cities.
Food is Linzer torte almond pastry with jam, schnitzel, würstel sausages, käsespätzle, local pastries, Danube fish, coffee culture, voestalpine worker bars.
