Finland

Finland is clean, quiet, and expensive but also one of the most interesting countries in Europe. It’s all about nature, saunas, and design. Summer has endless daylight and winter is dark but magical with northern lights. Finns are reserved but friendly once you break the ice.

Helsinki is the capital and it’s beautiful in an understated way. The harbor, the churches, the markets. Senate Square and the white cathedral are the postcard shots. Design District has amazing shops if you’re into Nordic design. Suomenlinna fortress is a quick ferry and worth an afternoon. The sauna culture is huge here. Public saunas like Loyly are modern and right on the water.

The food scene is good but expensive. Fish is fresh and local. Try salmon soup and Karelian pies. Coffee culture is serious and Finns drink more coffee per person than almost anywhere. Market halls have local food and it’s cheaper than restaurants.

Lapland up north is the big draw in winter. Rovaniemi is Santa Claus headquarters which is touristy but kids love it. Northern lights season is September to March. Dog sledding, reindeer rides, ice hotels. It’s expensive but unique. Summer in Lapland has midnight sun and great hiking.

The lake region in the middle is beautiful in summer. Thousands of lakes and cottages everywhere. Finns love their summer cottages with saunas. It’s peaceful and quiet. Tampere is the main city there and worth a stop.

Getting around means trains or buses between cities. Both are comfortable and expensive. Rent a car for Lapland or lake areas. Helsinki has great public transport with trams and metro. Everything is clean and runs on time.

Money is painful. It’s one of the pricier European countries. Meals start at fifteen euros. Beer is expensive. Cards work everywhere and cash is rarely needed.
