Cologne

Cologne sits on the Rhine River in western Germany as the fourth biggest city with a massive Gothic cathedral, Roman history, and relaxed beer culture. The city got heavily bombed in World War Two with the cathedral miraculously surviving while everything around it burned. Rebuilding happened fast leaving modern buildings mixed with restored old quarters. The cathedral dominates the skyline visible from everywhere and worth the visit. Two to three days covers the main sights and lets you experience the beer halls serving Kölsch the local brew. Carnival in February turns the city wild with parades and costumes for a week straight.

Cathedral and Old Town

Cologne Cathedral is one of the tallest churches in the world with twin Gothic spires reaching 157 meters. Construction started in 1248 and finally finished in 1880. The interior feels enormous with stained glass and the Shrine of the Three Kings holding relics. Climbing the 533 steps to the tower platform gives views across the Rhine and city. The cathedral sits right next to the main train station so you see it immediately arriving. Hohenzollern Bridge next door is covered with thousands of love locks couples attach to the railings. Old Town Altstadt along the river has narrow lanes with colorful buildings rebuilt after the war. The town hall has a Renaissance facade. Twelve Romanesque churches scattered around show the city’s medieval importance. Museum Ludwig near the cathedral has modern art including major Pop Art collection.

Beer Halls and Rhine Promenade

Kölsch beer is the local specialty served in small 200ml glasses called stangen. The waiters called Köbes bring new ones automatically until you put a coaster on top. Früh am Dom and Gaffel am Dom near the cathedral are classic beer halls with traditional food. The breweries each make their own Kölsch. Rhine promenade on both sides of the river fills with people walking, cycling, and sitting in summer. Belgian Quarter has independent shops, cafes, and bars in a residential neighborhood.

Food is himmel un ääd black pudding with mashed potatoes and apples, halve hahn rye roll with aged cheese, sauerbraten marinated beef, reibekuchen potato pancakes, Kölsch beer.
