Munich

Munich sits in southern Bavaria as Germany’s third biggest city with beer halls, BMW headquarters, and Alps visible on clear days. The city keeps strong Bavarian identity with lederhosen and dirndls still worn during festivals and traditional culture taken seriously. World War Two destroyed much of the center but reconstruction brought back the historical look. Three to four days covers the main sights and beer gardens. It’s expensive compared to eastern Germany but worth it for the atmosphere. Oktoberfest runs two weeks in September drawing millions to massive beer tents though the city has plenty without the chaos of festival time.

Marienplatz and City Center

Marienplatz is the central square with the New Town Hall and its glockenspiel that performs at 11am and noon with figurines dancing and jousting. Crowds gather to watch and take photos. The old town radiates from here with pedestrian shopping streets and churches. Frauenkirche cathedral has twin onion domes defining the skyline with a legend about the devil’s footprint in the entrance. You can climb the tower for views. Viktualienmarkt next to Marienplatz is the daily food market with produce stalls, flowers, and beer garden in the middle. Locals shop here daily for fresh ingredients and eat standing at the counters. The atmosphere stays authentic despite tourist presence.

Beer Halls and English Garden

Hofbräuhaus is the most famous beer hall founded in 1589 serving liters to tourists and locals under vaulted ceilings with oompah bands playing. It’s touristy but the experience delivers. Augustiner Bräu and Löwenbräukeller are other classic halls with better local vibes. English Garden north of center is one of the world’s biggest urban parks with beer gardens, naked sunbathers, and the Eisbach river wave where surfers ride year round. The Chinese Tower beer garden in the park holds thousands drinking under chestnut trees. People bring their own food and just buy beer which keeps costs down.

Museums and Alpine Trips

Residenz palace in the center has ornate rooms showing Bavarian royalty wealth. The treasury holds jewels and crowns. BMW Welt and Museum near Olympic Park displays cars and motorcycles with futuristic architecture. Dachau concentration camp memorial sits 30 minutes outside confronting Nazi history honestly. Neuschwanstein Castle is two hours south as the fairy tale Disney inspiration perched on Alpine cliffs. Salzburg Austria sits close across the border.

Food is weisswurst white sausage eaten before noon, schweinshaxe pork knuckle, obatzda cheese spread, pretzels, schnitzel, apple strudel, beer obviously, roast pork with dumplings.
