Naxos

Naxos sits in the Cyclades as the biggest island in the chain with mountain villages, ancient ruins, and long sandy beaches less crowded than Mykonos or Santorini. It’s more authentic and affordable with actual Greek life beyond tourism. Farmers grow potatoes and olives in the interior while kitesurfers ride the wind on the west coast. The main town Chora has a Venetian castle and the famous Portara temple gate on the harbor. Four to five days covers the beaches and mountain villages. Ferries connect to Athens and other islands making it easy to reach. The island works for everyone from backpackers to families.

Chora and Portara

Chora town climbs the hillside with the kastro Venetian castle on top built in the 1200s. The old town inside the walls has narrow marble lanes with Catholic and Orthodox churches mixed together from centuries of different rulers. Locals still live here unlike some islands where tourism pushed everyone out. The archaeological museum in the kastro has Cycladic figurines and artifacts. Portara is the massive marble doorway standing alone on the islet connected by causeway to the harbor. It’s the remains of an unfinished Apollo temple from 530 BC. Everyone walks out for sunset photos with the gateway framing the sun. The old town waterfront has tavernas and cafes cheaper than Mykonos with fresh fish and local wine. The harbor fills with fishing boats and ferries coming and going constantly.

Beaches and Water Sports

Agios Prokopios and Agia Anna beaches south of town have white sand and clear water stretching for kilometers. The beaches stay organized with sunbeds but plenty of free space. Plaka Beach continues south even longer and less developed. Mikri Vigla on the southwest coast gets constant wind making it the kitesurfing and windsurfing center with schools and rentals. Hawaii Beach next door has waves for surfing. The beaches on the west coast stay wilder with fewer facilities. Alyko Beach south has cedar trees reaching the sand and old abandoned hotel ruins adding atmosphere.

Mountain Villages and Hiking

The interior mountains have marble quarries and traditional villages connected by winding roads. Halki village has neoclassical buildings and the Vallindras distillery making kitron citrus liqueur since 1896. Apiranthos higher up feels like a mountain town with marble streets and locals speaking an old dialect. Filoti sits at the base of Mount Zas the highest peak in the Cyclades. You can hike to the top for views across the island. The valleys have olive groves and stone towers. Rent a car or scooter to explore properly.
