Santorini

Santorini is the Instagram Greek island with white buildings and blue domes. It’s stunning and expensive and packed with tourists. The sunsets in Oia are famous for a reason. The views are incredible but you pay for it. If you can handle crowds and prices, it’s worth seeing once.

Oia is the postcard village at the northern tip. Everyone comes for sunset and it’s shoulder to shoulder. The blue domed churches, the cliff views, the whitewashed buildings. It’s beautiful but also a zoo. Go early morning for photos without crowds. Stay in Oia if you can afford it but expect to pay double.

Fira is the main town in the middle. More restaurants and shops. The cable car or donkeys go down to the port. The cliff walk between Fira and Oia takes a few hours with amazing views. Do it early before heat kicks in. Imerovigli along the way is quieter with equally good views.

The beaches are weird black or red volcanic sand. They get hot. Perissa and Kamari on the east side are the main ones. Red Beach near Akrotiri is famous but small and crowded. The beaches aren’t why you come here. It’s all about the caldera views.

Akrotiri has Minoan ruins like a mini Pompeii. Interesting if you’re into archaeology. Wineries do tours and tastings. The volcanic soil makes interesting wines. Book ahead for sunset wine tours because they fill up.

Getting around means buses, taxis, or rental car. Buses connect main spots but get packed. Quad bikes are popular but roads are narrow and steep. Be careful. Many people just stay in one area and don’t move around much.

Food is Greek with volcano views. Prices are high because of the location. Sunset dinner reservations needed weeks ahead. The fish is fresh but expensive. Fava dip is local.

Best time is shoulder season April to May or September to October. Summer is insanely crowded.
