Cinque Terre

Cinque Terre is five colorful villages on the Italian Riviera cliffs. It’s touristy and crowded and still beautiful. The hiking trails between towns are stunning with ocean views. It gets slammed in summer so timing matters. Go early or late in the day to avoid the worst crowds.

The five villages are Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore. Each has its own vibe. Monterosso has the only real beach and it’s the biggest. Vernazza is the prettiest with the little harbor. Corniglia sits on top of a cliff with stairs up from the station. Manarola and Riomaggiore are smaller and connected by the famous Via dell’Amore path.

Hiking between villages is the main activity. The trails range from easy to tough. Monterosso to Vernazza is scenic but steep in parts. Vernazza to Corniglia is the hardest section. The coastal views are incredible. Bring water and wear good shoes. Some sections close after heavy rain. Check before you go.

The train connects all five villages in minutes. It’s easier than hiking if you’re short on time or tired. Trains run frequently. Buy a Cinque Terre card for unlimited trains and trail access. Boats between villages run in good weather and give you different views from the water.

Food is seafood and pesto. Pesto originated here. Anchovies are big. Focaccia is everywhere. Prices are tourist level so expect to pay more. Wine from the hillside vineyards is good. Sciacchetra is the sweet dessert wine.

Stay overnight if you can. Day trippers leave by evening and villages get peaceful. Monterosso has more accommodation options. Book way ahead for summer. La Spezia nearby is cheaper for hotels.

Getting here means train to La Spezia then local trains into the park. Cars aren’t useful. Villages are car-free or restricted.
