Best Cities to Visit in Italy: Your Ideal Destination
Trust me when I say Italy’s most amazing destinations will absolutely steal your heart. The best cities to visit in
Naples sits on the bay in southern Italy as the chaotic capital of Campania with crumbling palaces, pizza invented here, and Vesuvius volcano looming over everything. It’s the third biggest Italian city and feels completely different from the polished north with laundry strung across alleys, scooters weaving through traffic, and street life spilling everywhere. The city has a reputation for crime and grit which keeps some tourists away but the energy and authenticity deliver experiences sanitized places lack. Three to four days covers the center and day trips to Pompeii, Amalfi Coast, or islands. Summer gets hot and crowded while spring and fall work better. It’s affordable with incredible pizza and street food.
Spaccanapoli is the arrow-straight street cutting through the historic center following the ancient Greek road layout. The narrow lane runs for kilometers with churches, pizza shops, and craftsmen workshops crammed together. Via dei Tribunali parallel north has more pizzerias and the San Gregorio Armeno alley famous for nativity scene figurine makers. The streets buzz with scooters, vendors, and constant noise. Naples Cathedral holds the blood of San Gennaro that supposedly liquefies three times yearly with bad omens if it fails. The Sansevero Chapel has the Veiled Christ marble sculpture with transparent veil carved from single stone showing incredible skill. Underground Naples tours explore Greek and Roman ruins, aqueducts, and World War Two bomb shelters beneath the streets. The layers of history stack on top of each other.
Castel Nuovo Maschio Angioino sits by the port with the triumphal arch entrance and medieval towers. The views from ramparts look across the bay to Vesuvius. Castel dell’Ovo sits on a small island connected by causeway as the oldest castle with the borgo marinaro fishing village restaurants below. Lungomare waterfront promenade stretches along the bay with Neapolitans walking and hanging out especially Sundays. Via Caracciolo runs past Villa Comunale park to Mergellina harbor where hydrofoils leave for islands. The panorama across the bay to Vesuvius and Sorrento peninsula defines Naples. Piazza del Plebiscito is the massive square with the Royal Palace and San Francesco di Paola church copying the Pantheon.
Pizza napoletana with soft puffy crust blistered from wood ovens was invented here. Da Michele and Sorbillo are famous but every neighborhood has excellent spots for few euros. The pizza stays simple with San Marzano tomatoes and buffalo mozzarella. Pompeii sits 30 minutes south buried by Vesuvius eruption in 79 AD with preserved Roman city you can walk through. Herculaneum nearby has better preserved houses. Amalfi Coast towns like Positano reach easily. Capri and Ischia islands connect by hydrofoil.
Food is pizza margherita, pizza marinara, sfogliatella pastry, baba rum cake, spaghetti alle vongole, fried pizza, coffee always, limoncello, mozzarella di bufala, street food everywhere.
