Venice

Venice is unique and touristy and still worth it. A city built on water with no cars, just canals and bridges. It’s sinking, it’s crowded, and it’s also magical. Two or three days is enough. Go early morning or evening when day trippers leave and you get glimpses of the real city.

San Marco Square is the main tourist zone. The Basilica is stunning with gold mosaics inside. The Doge’s Palace next door is worth seeing for the Bridge of Sighs and massive rooms. Book tickets online or you’ll wait hours. The square floods regularly at high tide which is weird to see.

Getting lost in the backstreets is the best part. Ditch your map and wander. Every turn reveals another canal, bridge, or tiny square. Cannaregio and Dorsoduro neighborhoods are quieter than San Marco. Castello is where more locals live. The further from San Marco, the better it gets.

The Grand Canal is the main water highway. Take the vaporetto water bus down it for cheap views. It’s public transport, not a tour, but you see the palaces. Gondolas are expensive and touristy but also quintessentially Venice. Share one to split the cost. Early morning is best.

Murano island has glass factories. Burano has colorful houses and lace. Both are day trips from Venice and worth going if you have time. Less crowded than the main city. The boat rides out there show you the lagoon.

Food is seafood and cicchetti small plates. Avoid restaurants right on San Marco because they’re tourist traps. Walk ten minutes away and prices drop. Rialto Market has fresh fish mornings. Spritz is the aperitif. Coffee at standing bars is cheap, sitting down costs triple.

Getting around means walking and vaporetto boats. No cars or bikes. Buy a vaporetto pass for a few days. Everything is well signed. You’ll still get lost but that’s half the fun.

Hotels are expensive. Stay in Mestre on the mainland and train in to save money.
