Cotswolds

The Cotswolds is rolling hills and honey-colored stone villages in England. It’s picture perfect countryside that looks like a movie set. Thatched cottages, pub gardens, sheep everywhere. It’s touristy and expensive but also genuinely beautiful. You need a car to see it properly.

The villages all look similar but each has its charm. Bourton-on-the-Water has the little river through the middle and gets packed. Castle Combe is tiny and perfect. Bibury has Arlington Row cottages that everyone photographs. The Slaughters are two villages that are quieter than their names suggest. Broadway has the tower with views.

The market towns are less touristy. Cirencester is the unofficial capital with Roman history. Stow-on-the-Wold has antique shops. Chipping Campden is at the start of the Cotswold Way walking trail. Moreton-in-Marsh has a weekly market.

Walking trails connect villages if you want to hike. The Cotswold Way is a hundred miles end to end but you can do shorter sections. The countryside is gentle rolling hills. Public footpaths cross private land which is amazing for access. Spring has lambs and flowers. Fall has colors.

Pubs are everywhere and they’re the social centers. Sunday roasts are a big deal. Cream teas at tea rooms. Local food is hearty British stuff. Some places are fancy and expensive. Others are normal pub prices.

Getting around needs a car. Villages are spread out and buses are limited. The roads are narrow and winding. Parking in popular villages fills up fast. Base yourself in one town and day trip around. Oxford and Bath bookend the region if you’re coming by train.

Money adds up. Accommodation is pricey especially in peak times. Meals vary from pub grub to fancy restaurants. It’s one of the more expensive parts of England.
