Scotland

Scotland is dramatic landscapes, old castles, whisky, and unpredictable weather. It’s one of the most beautiful parts of the UK and totally different from England. The Highlands are stunning, Edinburgh is gorgeous, and the people are friendly. Just pack layers because weather changes hourly.

Edinburgh is the capital and it’s one of the best cities in Europe. The castle dominates the skyline. Walk the Royal Mile from the castle down to Holyrood Palace. Old Town has narrow alleys and hidden closes. New Town is Georgian architecture and shops. Climb Arthur’s Seat for views. The whisky experience is touristy but fun if you like whisky.

Glasgow is grittier and more real. Great music scene, museums, street art. Kelvingrove Museum is excellent and free. The West End has cafes and bars. It’s cheaper than Edinburgh and less touristy. Use it as a base for day trips.

The Highlands are the main draw. Glencoe valley is stunning and dramatic. Fort William is the gateway town. Ben Nevis is the highest peak if you want to hike. Isle of Skye has incredible scenery but gets busy. Fairy Pools, Old Man of Storr, Quiraing. You need a car to see it properly.

Loch Ness has the famous monster legend but honestly the loch is just nice. Urquhart Castle ruins are pretty. Inverness is the main town up there. The North Coast 500 road trip is beautiful but takes a week.

Getting around the Highlands needs a car. Trains connect Edinburgh and Glasgow to other cities. Edinburgh and Glasgow have good public transport. Driving is on the left and roads can be narrow and winding.

Money is British pounds. Scotland is expensive like the rest of the UK. Meals add up, accommodation is pricey. Budget more than you think.
