Oceania

From snorkelling the Great Barrier Reef to hiking New Zealand’s backcountry tracks, this hub pulls together everything I’ve learned about travelling Oceania, the wins, the gotchas, and the routes I would take if I was travelling Oceania tomorrow. Below you’ll find my latest guides as they’re published: coastal road trips, island-hopping adventures, multi-day treks, wildlife encounters and practical “how to” posts. If you’re planning your first trip, start with timing (seasons are flipped; summer = Dec–Feb, avoid cyclone season in the Pacific), entry rules (eTA for Australia/NZ; visa-free varies for Pacific islands), and how you’ll move around (distances are deceptive—domestic flights save days; campervan hire is iconic; ferries link islands). Costs skew high in Australia and New Zealand, while Pacific islands range from budget Fiji to pricey French Polynesia, so I add real numbers where possible and flag fuel costs and campsite fees. My aim is simple: help you stitch together days that actually flow, less faff, more “this is why we came”.

Oceania planning basics in 60 seconds:

  • When to go: shoulder seasons (spring/autumn) balance weather and crowds; avoid Nov–April cyclones in Pacific islands; NZ winter = ski season.
  • Getting around: fly between countries; rent campervans/cars for Australia/NZ road trips; inter-island ferries and puddle-jumpers in the Pacific.
  • Money & safety: cards widely accepted in Aus/NZ; cash king in Pacific islands. Wildlife and ocean are the main hazards—respect warnings.
  • Stays: book Great Walks/campsites months ahead; freedom camping popular in NZ; island resorts and beach bungalows fill fast in high season.

I’m a travel-obsessed guy who’s been chasing that perfect moment for more years than I can remember – still buzzing like a kid! One Greek island trip changed everything. Now I share travel secrets most tourists miss through Soft Footprints. Trust me: life-changing places aren’t all on TripAdvisor.
