Australia

Australia is massive with deserts, rainforests, beaches, and unique wildlife. It’s the size of the US with way fewer people. The cities are modern and expensive. Everything wants to kill you is mostly a joke but check for spiders. Three weeks barely scratches the surface. Distances are huge so flights between regions make sense. Summer is December to February and gets brutally hot inland.

Australia Sydney and East Coast

Sydney has the Opera House and Harbour Bridge as the iconic landmarks. The harbor is beautiful with ferries connecting neighborhoods. Bondi Beach is famous with surfers and backpackers. The Bondi to Coogee coastal walk has ocean views. The Rocks area near the bridge has historic buildings and weekend markets. Melbourne south has coffee culture, street art in laneways, and sports obsession. The Great Ocean Road west of Melbourne has the Twelve Apostles rock formations. Brisbane further north is more relaxed and warm year round. The Gold Coast has theme parks and surf beaches.

Australia Great Barrier Reef and Tropical North

Cairns is the jumping point for the Great Barrier Reef. Day trips go out to the reef for snorkeling and diving. The coral is bleaching from warming water but parts are still beautiful. The fish and sea life are incredible. Daintree Rainforest north of Cairns is ancient tropical forest. Cape Tribulation is where rainforest meets reef. Crocodiles live in the rivers so don’t swim. The Whitsunday Islands have white sand beaches. Whitehaven Beach looks unreal with pure white sand. Hamilton Island is the resort base.

Australia Outback and Red Centre

Uluru in the center is the giant red rock sacred to Aboriginal people. You can’t climb it anymore out of respect. The rock changes color at sunrise and sunset. Kings Canyon nearby has rim walks with views. Alice Springs is the outback town in the middle of nowhere. The drive between places takes days through empty desert. Perth on the west coast is isolated but has beaches and wine regions. Tasmania island south has wilderness and cool climate. Kangaroos, koalas, wombats show up everywhere outside cities.

Food is meat pies, fish and chips, Tim Tams, Vegemite, flat whites, fresh seafood.
