Guatapé Town

Guatapé Town is a small colorful village in Colombia about two hours from Medellin. The buildings are painted bright colors with detailed designs on the lower walls. It sits next to a huge reservoir with islands everywhere. The town is tiny and touristy but genuinely pretty. One or two days is enough. Most people come as a day trip from Medellin.

Guatapé Town’s Colorful Streets

The main attraction is just walking around looking at buildings. Every house has zocalos which are decorative panels at the base. They show scenes of daily life, animals, people, and random designs. Each owner picks their own style and colors. The town square has restaurants with outdoor seating. Souvenir shops sell the same stuff everywhere. It gets busy on weekends with Colombian tourists. The whole town is maybe six blocks so you see it all quickly.

El Peñol Rock Near Guatapé Town

El Peñol rock is the giant stone next to Guatapé Town. It’s 200 meters tall and you climb 740 steps built into a crack. The stairs are steep and tiring in the heat. The view from the top shows the reservoir spreading out with green islands. The water is calm and blue green. People sell drinks at the top which you definitely need. The rock used to have letters that said Guatapé but only G and I remain.

Guatapé Town Lake Activities

The reservoir around Guatapé Town has boat tours and water activities. You can rent jet skis or take a boat between islands. Some islands have mansions that drug cartels built back in the day. Pablo Escobar had a estate nearby that got blown up. The water is warm and clean enough for swimming. Kayaks and paddleboards rent by the hour. The lake is artificial and was made by flooding the valley for a dam.

Food is typical Colombian with arepas, empanadas, and fresh trout from the lake.
