Ecuador sits on South America’s Pacific coast straddling the equator with the Andes mountains splitting the country, Amazon rainforest to the east, and the Galapagos Islands offshore. The country stays compact making it easy to cover diverse landscapes quickly. Quito is the high-altitude capital while Guayaquil brings coastal heat and port energy. One to two weeks covers the mainland with the Galapagos requiring additional time and budget. The country uses the US dollar simplifying money. Year-round temperatures vary by altitude with coast hot and humid while highlands stay cool. Spanish is the main language with indigenous Kichwa spoken in communities. It’s cheaper than neighboring Colombia and Peru with hostels and meals costing less. The population mixes mestizo, indigenous, and Afro-Ecuadorian cultures.
Quito sits at 2850 meters as one of the world’s highest capitals with colonial old town earning UNESCO status. The historic center has churches dripping with gold, Plaza Grande with the presidential palace, and La Compañía church with ornate baroque interior. Basílica del Voto Nacional has towers you can climb for views across the sprawling city and volcanoes beyond. The neighborhood La Mariscal north brings hostels, restaurants, and bars catering to backpackers. The TelefériQo cable car climbs Pichincha volcano to 4100 meters with views and hiking trails. The altitude hits hard so take it slow. The Middle of the World monument Mitad del Mundo sits north marking the equator line though GPS shows the actual equator sits 240 meters away. The avenue of volcanoes runs south from Quito with Cotopaxi volcano rising 5897 meters as a perfect snow-capped cone. You can hike to the refuge at 4800 meters or summit with guides.
Otavalo north has the famous Saturday market where indigenous people sell textiles, blankets, and crafts in the Plaza de Ponchos. The market draws tourists but locals still trade produce and animals. The surrounding villages have weavers working looms. Cuicocha crater lake nearby has hiking trails around the rim with views to volcanoes. Mindo cloud forest west of Quito has hummingbirds, waterfalls, and zip lines through the canopy. The town brings birdwatchers and nature lovers. Baños south sits lower with hot springs, waterfalls, and the gateway to Amazon basin. The town has adventure tourism with rafting, canyoning, and the famous swing Casa del Árbol on the cliff edge with Tungurahua volcano steaming behind.
Cuenca sits in the southern highlands as the colonial city with cobblestone streets, blue-domed cathedral, and slower pace than Quito. The city feels manageable with markets, museums, and the riverside walkway. Panama hat production centers here despite the name. Guayaquil on the coast is the biggest city with the Malecón 2000 waterfront, iguana park, and Las Peñas colorful hillside neighborhood with stairs climbing to lighthouse views. The city stays hot and humid year-round. The coast has beaches from party town Montañita with surf and nightlife to quieter spots. Puerto López bases whale watching June to September when humpbacks migrate. Isla de la Plata offshore gets called the poor man’s Galapagos with blue-footed boobies.
Food is ceviche fresh from the coast, locro potato soup, hornado roast pork, empanadas, llapingachos potato pancakes, encebollado fish soup, cuy guinea pig in highlands, tropical fruits, cheap set lunch menus almuerzo.
