Massachusetts is in the northeast with colonial history, universities, and coastline. Boston dominates the state but smaller towns have charm. The fall colors are beautiful and winter is cold and snowy. Cape Cod beaches are popular in summer. A week covers Boston and day trips. The state feels historic and educated with colleges everywhere.
Boston is the state capital with red brick buildings and colonial sites. The Freedom Trail connects 16 historic spots with a red line on the sidewalk. Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market have food and street performers. Back Bay has Victorian brownstones and shops on Newbury Street. The Public Garden has swan boats in the lagoon. North End is the Italian neighborhood with narrow streets and cannoli shops. Cambridge across the river has Harvard and MIT campuses. Harvard Yard is classic college with red brick and ivy. The students make both areas feel young and smart.
Cape Cod is the hook shaped peninsula with beach towns. Route 6A has cute villages with antique shops. Provincetown at the tip is artsy and has a big gay community. The beaches face different directions so you pick bay side or ocean side. Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket islands are ferry rides from the cape. Both are expensive and preppy with shingled houses. The Vineyard has Oak Bluffs with colorful gingerbread cottages. Nantucket is smaller and even more exclusive. Summer is crowded and winter everything closes.
Salem north of Boston is famous for witch trials in 1692. The witch museum tells the story and shops sell witch themed everything. It’s touristy but the history is real. The House of Seven Gables is there too. Plymouth south of Boston has the Mayflower replica ship and Plymouth Rock. The rock is smaller than you expect. Lexington and Concord have Revolutionary War sites where fighting started. The towns are pretty with town greens and old churches.
Food is clam chowder, lobster rolls, Boston cream pie, cranberries, Dunkin coffee everywhere.
