Rhode Island is the smallest US state but has coastline, colonial towns, and mansions. You can drive across it in an hour. Newport is the main draw with Gilded Age estates. The state feels historic and coastal. A long weekend covers everything. Summer brings tourists to the beaches. It’s more affordable than nearby Cape Cod or Martha’s Vineyard.
Newport is the famous coastal town with massive mansions from the late 1800s. The Breakers is the biggest Vanderbilt mansion with 70 rooms and ocean views. Marble House and Rosecliff are also open for tours. Rich families built these as summer cottages which is insane. The Cliff Walk is a 3.5 mile path along the coast past the mansions. Ocean Drive loops around with views of rocky coastline. Downtown Newport has the historic waterfront with restaurants and shops. Sailboats fill the harbor in summer.
Providence is the capital and largest city with Brown University and RISD art school. College Hill has the campuses with historic buildings on steep streets. Benefit Street is called the mile of history with colonial houses. WaterFire is an art installation with bonfires in the river downtown that happens select nights. Federal Hill is the Italian neighborhood with restaurants and bakeries. The food scene is good for a small city. Thayer Street near Brown has student cafes and shops.
Narragansett has the beach with the Towers landmark and surf. Misquamicut Beach is the family beach with a boardwalk feel. Watch Hill is the fancy beach town with a historic carousel. Block Island is a ferry ride from Point Judith. The island has dramatic bluffs called Mohegan Bluffs. Bikes and mopeds are the way to explore. It’s quiet and expensive with New England charm. The beaches are less crowded than mainland spots.
Food is clam cakes, stuffies stuffed clams, Del’s frozen lemonade, coffee milk, johnnycakes.
