Beaches near Vai beach are best treated as a small group of very different coastal stops rather than a trip to Vai alone. The famous palm beach gets most of the attention, but staying there for the entire day means missing the better swimming and quieter coastline just a few minutes away.
Palekastro makes the most practical base for exploring them. From here, Vai, Itanos and Kouremenos are all close enough to combine in a single day, with each beach offering a distinctly different experience

🌴 Vai: The Most Famous Beach Near Vai
Vai is the famous name among the beaches near Vai beach because of its extraordinary palm grove. The beach curves around a sheltered bay, backed by a dense wall of native palms that gives it a setting unlike anywhere else on this stretch of Crete.
🏖️ Come for the Setting, Not the Best Swim
The sand is soft, the water clear and the bay relatively sheltered from the summer wind. The problem is popularity. By late morning, the car park begins filling, tour buses arrive and much of the beachfront becomes occupied by sunbeds and umbrellas.
🌴 Walk Above the Palm Grove
Don’t just stay at beach level. A short path behind the palms leads to elevated viewpoints, while another trail climbs the southern side of the bay. In around ten minutes, you can reach the best view of the palm forest meeting the sea.
Vai works best as a shorter stop: see the grove, walk to the viewpoint, have a swim if you want, then continue to the quieter beaches nearby.

🩵 Itanos: The Best Beach Near Vai
A few minutes beyond Vai, Itanos offers the strongest swimming of the beaches near Vai beach. The water is cleaner and clearer, crowds are much thinner and the absence of organised tourism gives the coastline a completely different feel.
🌊 Stay Here for the Longer Swim
There are no sunbeds, cafés or organised facilities. Instead, you get two neighbouring bays with a mixture of sand and pebbles, open sea and very little development. Even in August, visitor numbers can remain surprisingly low.
🏛️ Explore Ancient Itanos
The remains of ancient Itanos sit on the low headland between the bays. You can walk among the old walls, basilica outlines and scattered foundations without tickets or barriers, with around twenty to thirty minutes enough for a look around.
Bring water and your own shade, as there are no facilities. If you’re choosing one beach in this area for a proper swim, Itanos is the one to prioritise.
It also earns its place among the best beaches in East Crete.

💨 Kouremenos: The Best Beach for Windsurfing
Kouremenos is one of the more exposed beaches near Vai beach, with a long, open shoreline just north of Palekastro. It feels much broader than Vai, with visitors spread along the coast rather than concentrated into a small bay.
🌊 Swim Here in the Morning
Morning is the better time for swimming, when the sea is calmer and the beach feels spacious. The sand is rougher than Vai and the water becomes deeper more quickly, but there’s plenty of room to find your own spot.
🏄 Come Later for Windsurfing
By summer afternoons, the meltemi can hit this coastline hard. Kouremenos then becomes one of eastern Crete’s most reliable windsurfing spots, with boards and sails filling the water.
For ordinary swimming, Itanos is the better beach. Kouremenos makes more sense when you want easy access, plenty of space or specifically want the wind.

🧭 The Best Order to Visit the Beaches Near Vai
The beaches near Vai beach work best when you visit them in sequence from Palekastro rather than choosing one and staying there all day. The three main beaches are close enough to combine comfortably.
🩵 Start with Itanos
Go to Itanos first while it’s quiet and before the sun becomes too strong. This gives you the best swimming conditions at the strongest beach in the area.
🌴 Visit Vai Mid-Morning
Move back to Vai before the tour buses fully arrive. Spend your time exploring the palm grove, walking to the viewpoint and perhaps having a short swim rather than settling here for hours.
💨 Leave Kouremenos Until Last
Kouremenos works for an early return swim near Palekastro, but later in the day it’s better suited to windsurfing as the wind strengthens.
If time is limited, remember the simple distinction: Itanos for the best beach, Vai for the famous setting and Kouremenos for wind and space.
